Reviews
The Amazon Kindle is more than I could have hoped it to be. The functionality, ease of use, volume of books, and screen quality all surpass what I would have imagined or surmised from reviews. I've played around with a friend of mine's older generation Kindle and this is a far cry from that device. I also own a smaller Sony Reader Pocket, and while that device is VERY compact and portable. It just doesn't offer the wealth of features that the Kindle DX does. I can easily see how the two could be considered, "Apples and Oranges," due to the different MO's if the two devices, but if you take away any one thing let it be this: The Amazon store and the screen darkness/clarity are MUCH better than anything the competitors have to offer. Other additional features that anyone can appreciate are led by Whisper Sync. Having your primary device sync up with your secondary and tertiary devices is just outstanding. The only caveat of this feature is that the wireless does have to be enabled, which will increase your battery drain. That being said, I bought my DX in the beginning of August and after daily extended use, did not have to charge it until about a month later. I can strongly recommend this product. I think that both versions of the Kindle have much to offer, but if you aren't on a gadget budget, or have some extra cash, and don't mind a device that's about the same size of a marble composition book (w/o a cover), then this device will not disappoint. An additional note for those of you that might be on the fence about an electronic reading device or think you aren't "tech-savvy," the set-up of this device is very simple and it comes with a pretty easy to understand user guide that is stored on the device so you'll always have it for a reference guide. This guide also isn't written as a dryer-than-bones instruction manual, it's truly a reference manual; written as if you were having a conversation with a knowledgeable friend. Good luck!
While I absolutely love the intent of this product, and the reading experience is much more authentic than reading on my iPad (which I also love), I have had to have my Kindle DX replaced two times already in the first year that I've owned it. The first time the battery wouldn't stay charged, the second time the 3G radio stopped working properly and the battery wouldn't stay charged and now after having this newest replacement Kindle for only a few months, the screen has stopped working. I called Kindle support again and while they have always been very helpful in the past and I've always received the new Kindle the very next day when there has been a problem, today the friendly guy in support tells me that now my Kindle DX is out of the warranty period and it will cost me $190 for a replacement. This after paying the full price only a little more than a year ago and having it replaced twice in that year. I just can't do it, I paid full price the first time, I can't drop another $200 just to use this thing for more than a year, and I'm sure it'll break again soon. It's to bad really, because when it worked I loved it. I guess I'll be reading all my Kindle books on my iPad from now on. Unfortunately I can't recommend this based on cost and unreliability.
The new Kindle screen contrast is fantastic for reading. The whole operation for downloading books is so easy and hassle free it is almost addicting. The customer support is remarkable. I left my kindle in our van over the weekend and when I went to use it the screen had lines ( might have gotten too hot )running through it. I called customer support and they shipped out a new kindle, next day ship at no charge. How cool is that.
I HAD DOUBTS AS TO WHETHER I WOULD REALLY BE ABLE TO USE THIS DEVICE FULLY - I LIVE IN A SMALLLL TOWN IN RURAL SOUTH AFRICA WHERE CELLULAR SIGNAL STRENGTH SOMETIMES IS DODGY OR WEAK AND INTERMITTANT . BUT ALL FOR NAUGHT ! MY KINDLE DX WORKED PERFECTLY AND WHOLE BOOKS WERE DOWNLOADED WIRELESSLY IN THIRTY SECONDS . MY KINDLE THEN DEVELOPED A PROBLEM AND IN LESS THAN THREE MINUTES ON THE PHONE AMAZON OFFERED A REPLACEMENT -WHAT INCREDIBLE SERVICE !
I had read a lot about the debate between e-ink and tablet computers. When I got my kindle all debates were put to rest. My kindle is so easy on my eyes as compared to my laptop (don't own a tablet yet). Thanks Amazon!
